School
The original site was purchased to build a school and a convent. The school was established first in 1962. The following extract from the Annals of St. Maries of the Isle records the event
29 June 1962: Feast of the Sacred Heart. Today the Sisters went to the new school in Mayfield – a Primary School, under the title of Our Lady Queen. Sr. M. P. Nolasco has been appointed the Principal. She will be accompanied by Sr. M. de Montfort. The enrollment was most satisfactory. The rooms were blessed by Rev. Fr. Kelleher. The official opening of the school will take place later.
29 October 1963 Our Lady Queen School was officially opened and blessed by Very Rev. J. Canon Bastible. The ceremony took place in the school assembly hall.
For the first twenty years prior to the building of the convent the Sisters commuted every day from St. Maries of the Isle. Their passion for the mission to the poor and the needs of the people at every level sustained them and gave them a great sense of purpose- their ministry was lived with great generosity, faithfulness and enjoyment.
As new housing estates were being built in this area it was necessary to make provision for much bigger numbers than the school has hitherto been able to take. In October 1974 an extension of eight new rooms was added to the Primary School.
Convent
On the 19th January 1982 The Convent of Our Lady Queen, Mayfield, was officially opened. The six Sisters went to live there.
On the 19th October 1983 a Sister began social work in Mayfield. Another Sister joined her later. They lived in the convent in Mayfied.
Over the years many other Sisters lived and worked in various ministries in Mayfield- the primary school, pre-school, parent groups, social services, prayer groups and liturgy etc.
The foundation in Mayfield coincided with the development of the growing city and it was a great place to live out mercy and be merciful. The Sisters built up great and lasting relationships with the local people.
In 2016 as times and circumstances changed the decision was made to close the convent in Mayfield. The four remaining Sisters left for other homes on the 24th August 2016. The convent was finally sold 2019.
