At the invitation of the Bishop, Most Rev. Dr. Power, and the P.P. of Dunmore East, a small group of sisters from Clonakilty came to begin a foundation. They were Srs. Columba Marmion, Superior, Eugenius, Kieran and Mary. They took up residence in the Convent on May 24th. When the foundation in Dunmore was established , the convent attached to the Workhouse in John’s Hill became a branch of Dunmore. The convent, an imposing building overlooking the harbour, was built earlier in the century by the Marquis of Waterford as his summer residence. It subsequently became the Bay Hotel before Fr. Crotty P.P. bought it for the sisters. It was intended as a temporary residence only, until a more suitable site could be found near to the parish church in Killea. But this was never realised and the sisters remained in the original convent until it was sold in 1990. The main work of the sisters in Dunmore was in the primary school and visitation of the sick. In 1989, a new Primary School was built and at present (1994) there is only one sister in the school and she commutes from Waterford every day.
Convent was sold 17 May 1991
