Cappoquin to Brisbane

From Cappoquin Annals :

In 1871 Mother Vincent Whitty visited Cappoquin for the purpose of getting professed Sisters for her mission in Brisbane. She was accompanied by Mother Liguori Keenan from Baggot Street. Sr. Xavier Desmond volunteered to go to Australia.  On the 3 November she departed for Charleville convent to meet Mother Vincent Whitty. She sailed to Brisbane January 23rd 1872.

(From the Records of the Brisbane congregation )                                                                                               On 23 January 1872  she set sail for Brisbane  on the ship ‘Storm King’ and entered the convent of All Hallows, Brisbane, Queensland. In 1873 in the company of Mother Vincent Whitty she travelled 400 miles in the ship, ‘Lady Bowen’ to be part of the community in Rockhampton. For some years she was in charge of the Infants’ School in Derby Street. In 1878 she set out for Townsville, North Queensland, 900 miles from Brisbane to begin another mission. In 1882 when Rockhampton became independent of Brisbane she returned to take on the leadership of the congregation. In 1883 she returned to Townsville where she became the first Rev. Mother of the Townville Congregation and was connected with the Catholic life of the city until her death 40 years later. She died 2e November 1921.

In 1880 Sr. St. Michael O’Neill went to Brisbane from Cappoquin (no further information on her)
